DNS lookup
Find where a domain points. Inspect website records and mail authentication settings in one place.
Quick start
- Enter a domain name.
- Choose the record types to query.
- Compare the response with your intended settings.
Record types
| Type | Purpose |
|---|---|
| A | IPv4 address |
| AAAA | IPv6 address |
| CNAME | Alias to another DNS name |
| MX | Mail exchange; lower preference is tried first |
| NS | Authoritative nameservers |
| TXT | Text, including SPF and verification records |
| SOA | Zone authority and timing information |
| CAA | Certificate authority authorization |
TTL and cached results
TTL is a DNS cache lifetime. It is not a timer for a worldwide update to finish. Recursive resolvers and clients may hold different cached answers.
PPORT additionally caches DNS results for up to 120 seconds. A displayed TTL is the value captured at lookup time. For changes, compare the authoritative record and relevant resolver answers.
Mail authentication records
SPF is commonly stored in a TXT record at the sending domain. DMARC uses _dmarc.example.com; DKIM uses a selector such as selector._domainkey.example.com.
Use the actual domain and selector. A record being present does not confirm that its policy is correct or that real messages pass authentication.
No answer or lookup failure
A nonexistent name differs from an existing name without the selected record type. Some resolver failures may also leave no records in this tool. Check the selected types and the authoritative DNS configuration.
