My IP address
See the IP address PPORT observes for this connection. A router, proxy, or VPN can make it different from your device’s internal address.
Quick start
- Read the connection IP.
- Identify whether it is IPv4 or IPv6.
- Compare the route if it differs from your LAN address.
Which address is shown?
The server displays the address of the connection used to load this page. Behind IPv4 NAT, this is usually a shared exit address. A VPN or proxy may change the visible address.
Common differences
| Observation | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Different from the device’s LAN IP | The connection may pass through a router, NAT, VPN, or proxy. |
| Devices on the same Wi-Fi show different IPs | IPv6 gives each device its own global address, and devices on a VPN or mobile data leave through a different exit. Over IPv4, devices behind the same router usually share one public address. |
| Only one address version appears | The browser chose an IPv4 or IPv6 path for this request. |
Using the result
Use the displayed address when reviewing an external connection. Compare IPv4 with IPv4 and IPv6 with IPv6. An address can change when you reconnect, change networks, or enable a VPN.
What an IP cannot tell you
This page shows the connection address and its version. It does not provide exact location, identity, subscriber details, ISP, or ASN lookup. An IP alone is not proof of a person’s identity.
Checking your public IP from the command line
To find your public IPv4 from a server or terminal without a browser, query OpenDNS’s special name. The result is your own public IP, so it is not shown here.
nslookup myip.opendns.com resolver1.opendns.com
dig +short myip.opendns.com @resolver1.opendns.comWith a VPN on, you get the VPN’s exit address. If the browser and the command line disagree, check whether only one of them goes through a proxy or VPN.
Adding your IP to an allow list
- The public IPv4 of a home line can change when the router restarts or the ISP reassigns it. If SSH or an admin page is open only to your IP and you are locked out, check your current address on this page first.
- Many devices rotate temporary IPv6 addresses for privacy. Allowing the 64-bit prefix (/64) is more stable than allowing a single address.
- In a cloud firewall, write a single IPv4 address as /32 and a single IPv6 address as /128. Opening a wide range also lets other customers of the same ISP in.
